Lauren Tewhata Moves Down South

19-year-old wing Lauren Tewhata has signed with the Mainland Pouākai ahead of the 2024 Tauihi season.

Born in France, Tewhata split her high school playing days between New Plymouth Girls High School and Queen Margaret College in Wellington. In 2022, she appeared in 3 games for the Tokomanawa Queens and represented New Zealand at the FIBA U18 Women’s Asian Championship.

“We’re excited to welcome Lauren to the Pouākai,“ said Head Coach Paul Flynn. “Lauren is an incredible young talent that has experience within the Junior National Team environment and in Tauihi, having spent time with Tokomanawa.”

“I have been impressed by her enthusiasm and commitment to developing her craft and am excited to work alongside her as she matures into a bona fide senior representative player.”

This July, Tewhata suited up for the New Zealand Women’s Select Team at the BLIA Cup in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The tournament featured teams hailing from Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and the United States.

“I am really excited to join the Mainland Pouākai team,” said Tewhata. “I’m looking forward to learning from the coaching staff and experienced players, who come from afar!”

“The community can look forward to a positive personality. I believe through hard work comes enjoyment and success. See you all soon!”

Lauren Tewhata joins a Pouākai team consisting of Esra McGoldrick, Sharne Robati, Mikhaela Cann, Cassandra Brown, McKenzie Forbes, Tara Manumaleuga, Haliegh Reinoehl, and Ashlee Strawbridge. Stay tuned for more player announcements coming your way soon!
