McGoldrick Back for Fourth Season With the Pouākai

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — The wait is over. We’re thrilled to begin unveiling your 2026 ProcureX Mainland Pouākai, starting with Tall Fern, Tauihi star, and cornerstone of the team, Esra McGoldrick!

“I’m really excited to be returning to the Mainland Pouākai this season,” said McGoldrick. “After stepping away from basketball to have my baby, Nikau, it feels pretty special to be back doing something that I love and have been a part of for so long.”

Entering her fourth season with the Pouākai and fifth in Tauihi, McGoldrick has already cemented herself as one of the league’s most accomplished players, currently sitting third all-time in games played.

“Esra returning for a fourth season is a significant signing for us,” said Head Coach Alex Stojkovic. “Continuity matters, and she’s someone who understands exactly who we are and how we want to play.”

After taking time away from the game to welcome her first child, McGoldrick is eager to make her long-awaited return to the court.

“Becoming a mama has been the most special experience, and while it has brought a whole new perspective to my life, I’ve also really missed basketball and the feeling of competing,” said McGoldrick, reflecting on her offseason.

“The journey back to playing has definitely been different this time around. I’ve had to be patient, listen to my body and take the time to rebuild properly, both physically and mentally. It’s been a process, but I’ve really enjoyed gradually finding my way back to the game while also learning how to balance being a mum and an athlete.”

McGoldrick has proven to be one of Tauihi’s most versatile forwards, providing an elite combination of shooting, length, and defensive aptitude. During the 2025 Tauihi season, McGoldrick posted averages of 11.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and a league-best 1.7 blocks per game.

“She’s developed into one of the premier two-way players in the league, and her versatility allows us to play in so many different ways,” said Stojkovic on McGoldrick’s impact. “Beyond that, she’s become an important leader within our group. We missed her enormously down the stretch last season, so having her back gives us a huge lift heading into 2026.”

“I’m really looking forward to getting back on court with the Pouākai, being around the team and competing again,” added McGoldrick. “I’m excited for what the season will bring and grateful to have the opportunity to return to the game I love, while also embracing this really special new chapter of my life as a mama.”

“We still believe Esra has another level to reach, and we’re excited to help her continue that journey while competing for a championship together.”
