Olivia O’Neill Back in Blue

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – Making her return to Tauihi and the ProBuild ITM Mainland Pouākai, get excited because Olivia O’Neill is back!

“Initially, I was told Olivia would be one of our physios, and my first thought was – she should be playing, not just strapping ankles!” said Coach Alex Stojkovic. “After watching a few more of her games for Checkers, I was convinced. She’s still got a lot to offer on the court and will be a key part of our Rapid League team this year.”

“Having taken a step back from basketball last year, I feel that my mentality towards the game has changed and I’m playing and training with a lot more purpose,” said O’Neill on her return. “I’m more confident in what I can bring to the team, and how I can get the best out of my team mates. I’m really grateful to be back a part of the club this year.”

A long-standing player for the Otago Gold Rush prior to the introduction of Tauihi, O’Neill played the inaugural season with the Southern Hoiho, later joining the Mainland Pouākai in 2023.

O’Neill last suited up for the Pouākai in 2023.

“When I first moved down here, one of the first things I did was watch the local club competition to see what talent was out there,” continued Stojkovic. “I remembered Olivia from her time with Pouākai a couple of years ago, and when I saw her play again, I was impressed. She’s fit, experienced, and has a really good understanding of the game.”

When asked to break down her game, O’Neill described her playstyle as being “most commonly known to be a facilitator or pass first point guard. I love playing with pace and high energy, and getting everyone involved in the game to show off their strengths.”

“Olivia gives us valuable experience and versatility in the guard rotation,” said Stojokivc. “We think she can not only lead within the Rapid League but also push for Tauihi minutes. Having someone who understands the game so well and is still in great shape makes her a fantastic addition to the group.”
