CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – The ProBuild ITM Mainland Pouākai will take a new direction in 2025, with the club confirming that Head Coach Paul Flynn will not be returning for the upcoming season.
Flynn’s leadership in his inaugural Tauihi season resulted in the most successful campaign in Pouākai history. Under his guidance, the team secured a franchise-best 8-4 record, finishing as the #1 seed for the first time and earning the Pouākai a home semi-final. His efforts were recognised being named Tauihi Coach of the Year, while the Pouākai were named Club of the Year under his leadership.
Further cementing the programme’s success, Mikhaela Cann and Haliegh Reinoehl both earned All-Star 5 selections, while Sharne Robati was honoured as the league’s Most Improved Player and Rapid League All-Star 5.
“Paul played an instrumental role in elevating the Pouākai to new heights,” said Pouākai GM Caleb Harrison. “His leadership, professionalism, and commitment were evident in every aspect of the programme, and the results on and off the court speak to his impact.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Flynn expressed gratitude for his time with the club and the relationships built along the way.
“Coaching the Pouākai this season has been an incredible privilege. I am immensely proud of what our players, coaching staff, and support team achieved together. Their dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence were the driving forces behind our success. I want to sincerely thank everyone – our athletes, staff, and the passionate Pouākai supporters – who made this journey so special.”
“This season has further strengthened my passion for coaching, and I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter and eager to continue making a positive impact in the game, and developing the athletes and teams I work with at highest level.”
“I am currently unable to commit to the upcoming Mainland Pouākai season with my current commitments in Australia. I thought best to give the opportunity to another coach who can commit now to support the clubs recruiting and preparation for the season ahead. I obviously want the programme to continue moving forward and felt this was the best way to achieve that,” stated Paul Flynn.
The Pouākai organisation thanks Paul for his contributions and wishes him the very best in his next chapter. The club is working towards announcing a new head coach for the 2025 season soon.
