Anticipation for the upcoming Pouākai season continues to grow as we add to the excitement with the introduction of our newest Mainland recruit, Ashburton standout Ashlee Strawbridge.
After finishing her collegiate career at New Mexico State, Strawbridge spent Autumn-through-Winter playing for the West Adelaide Bearcats in the NBL1 Central conference. With the Bearcats, she recorded per game averages of 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds – 2.5 of them being offensive – while shooting 36.8% from three.
“Ashlee is an exciting talent, with a tremendous work ethic. Having her return home to the Pouākai is fantastic for the team and the region,” said Head Coach Paul Flynn. “As one of the Tall Fern’s newest members, Ashlee is a critical piece to both our immediate and future success. Her dedication to improving her game will help us drive high standards programme wide.”
Strawbridge recently made her debut for the Tall Ferns at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Pre-Qualifiers in Mexico, suiting up against Montenegro, Mexico, and Mozambique.
“We’re looking forward to being a key benefactor of her experience with the National Programme and the Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Mexico,” added Flynn.
“I made the decision to play for Pouakai because it’s somewhere close to home and it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to play in front of friends and family,” said Strawbridge. “It’s also a really exciting opportunity to play with and against some really talented players.”
“Pouakai fans can expect lots of energy and aroha on the court and around the community.”
Ashlee Strawbridge’s addition strengthens an exciting roster, including the likes of Esra McGoldrick, Sharne Robati, Mikhaela Cann, Cassandra Brown, McKenzies Forbes, Tara Manumaleuga, and Haliegh Reinoehl. Stay tuned for more player announcements coming your way soon!
