Pouākai Sign Tall Fern McKenna Dale

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – We have another newcomer making the trip down south for the 2025 Tauihi season. Join us in welcoming McKenna Dale to the ProBuild ITM Mainland Pouākai!

One of New Zealand’s premier local talents, Dale spent her first two seasons of Tauihi basketball with the Tauranga Whai, winning the Tauihi Grand Final in 2024 alongside new Pouākai Head Coach Alex Stojkovic. Last season, she impressed with averages of 15.3 points and 5.5 rebounds, while shooting 49.6% from the field and 41.3% from deep.

“I coached McKenna last year and we won a championship together—she was a huge part of that,” said Stojkovic. “She’ll be a leader for this group, both on and off the floor. We’ll rely on her shooting, her poise under pressure, and her competitive fire. She knows what it takes to win, and she raises the level of everyone around her.”

“I’ve been able to build a great relationship with Alex over the past couple of years. He is a passionate coach who excels in developing players and building individual confidence. He coaches an exciting style of play that I enjoy playing in, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve this year.”

“Winning a championship together was an unforgettable experience that we both hope to repeat. Finishing at the top was a testament to his ability to recruit talent and create a positive culture in which every player can perform at their best.”

Dale first debuted as a Tall Fern in 2024 at the FIBA Olympic Qualifier Tournament. She is currently away on national team duties competing in China at the FIBA Asia Cup alongside the likes of Charlotte Whittaker, Esra McGoldrick and Ashlee Strawbridge.

“I hope I can add to the team culture of the Pouākai as a player who gives 100% on every play and loves team basketball,” said Dale. “I enjoy a fast paced game with lots of opportunities to run the floor and shoot the ball. As a player with a couple of years of experience, I also hope I can assist in leading the team when needed.”

During the Tauihi offseason, Dale signed with the WNBL’s Sydney Flames as an injury replacement. She has also been playing for the Mandurah Magic in the NBL1 East, sporting averages of 17.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and a scorching 46.5% on three-pointers.

“McKenna is one of the most complete players I’ve ever coached. She’s clutch, a fierce competitor, and – if you ask me – the best shooter in New Zealand. Her ability to stretch the floor, make big plays in big moments, and lead by example makes her the perfect player for the style we play at Pouākai.”

Dale arrives in Christchurch not just with hopes of raising the Tauihi trophy once again, but also connecting with the local community.

“First and foremost, to win a championship. On a more personal level, I hope to keep developing my game to become a more versatile player on both ends of the court. Finally, I hope to be able to become an active role model in the community. I started playing basketball in Christchurch, and I’m looking forward to giving back to a city that sparked my love for the game.”

“I’m incredibly grateful McKenna chose to come down and be part of what we’re building here,” added Stojkovic. “It wasn’t an easy decision for her, and that makes it mean even more to me.

“She has some ties to Christchurch from her younger years, and I know she’s going to feel right at home here. Having someone I trust so deeply, who knows how I coach and what I value, is really special. I couldn’t be more excited.”
