CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – The first import announcement of the 2025 Tauihi season is here, and we’re amped to introduce the newest member of the ProBuild ITM Mainland Pouākai, Taylor Mikesell!
A WNBA-experienced player with an extensive collegiate resume, Mikesell is set to provide the Pouākai with a world-class skill set as she makes the move to Aotearoa.
“I was looking for a high level league with a play style that fit mine,” said Mikesell on her decision to play Tauihi. “I’ve had a couple prior teammates play in New Zealand and had nothing but good things to say about the league and the competition level for improving their game.”
Mikesell was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school and committed to the University of Maryland, where she would go on to break the single season school record for three-pointers. Mikesell also made stops at Oregon and Ohio State, averaging 17.2 points, 3.2 three-pointers, and 41.4% from deep in her final season.
“I’m really excited to have Taylor join the Pouākai for the 2025 season. She was right at the top of my list when it came to elite shooters,” said Head Coach Alex Stojkovic. “Taylor can flat-out shoot the ball, and she already brings valuable pro experience from both the WNBA and Spain’s LF Endesa. She’s the kind of player who will thrive in our system.”
Mikesell was selected 13th overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever. She made her WNBA debut with the Atlanta Dream in 2023 against the New York Liberty, appearing in 6 games over the course of the season.
On her time in the WNBA, Mikesell said “I learned to really be a sponge, take advantage of the veterans’ knowledge and to find my role and star in it.”
Following training camp with the Los Angeles Sparks, Mikesell briefly joined Lointek Gernika Bizkaia of the Spanish Liga Femenina de Baloncesto, the highest level of competition in Spain.
“Taylor’s ability to space the floor is going to put real pressure on opposing defences,” added Stojkovic. “She’ll get plenty of opportunities to showcase her range from three, and we’ll be counting on her to stretch the defence for us. Just as important, she brings a serious work ethic – something that will help set the standard for our group and shape the culture we’re building here in Christchurch.”
Playing in New Zealand will be a brand new experience for the star American guard.
“I’m excited to see the scenery and explore a new culture!”
The flurry of announcements continues early next week, and Coach Stojkovic gives some clues as to who it might be.
“Our next announcement is going to be a special one. I don’t want to give too much away just yet, but here’s a hint: she’s a Tall Fern, arguably the best shooter in the country, and she has strong ties to Christchurch. Any guesses?”
